What Senior (Executive) Candidates must bring to the table to join McKinsey / BCG / Bain
Written by Dr. Jörn Kobus
BRINGING MANY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AND RICH EXPERTISE TO THE TABLE IS NOT enough to break into MBB. SENIOR PROFILES MUST SATISFY AN ADDITIONAL CORE REQUIREMENT.
We are coaching many senior candidates who are about to join the world’s top strategy consultancies. And while we are serving all kinds of senior candidates, let’s focus today on executive profiles who are trying to break into the very senior roles.

Concretely this means starting from Senior Manager level up to Partner-level roles or their respective equivalents on the expert tracks of these consultancies (e.g. Senior or Master Experts). Most of these candidates have in between 8 and 20 years of experience.
Executive profiles need to be perceived as “vision-aligned”.
Well, yes, these profiles do need to have all what more junior candidates also need to have – e.g. a bulletproof problem solving approach, good communication, quantitative understanding, and so on.

However, these executive profiles need to have something in addition. They need to be perceived as “vision-aligned”.
Let me explain with what we are referring to here. To be perceived “vision-aligned”
  • You need to understand what skills, experiences, and network you are bringing with you
  • You need to know exactly, what the world’s leading consultancies are looking for
  • Once answered 1. and 2., you then can build a concrete vision that answers (a) What you want do, (b) Why you want to do it, and (c) How you want to do it. This vision needs to be ambitious, appealing, realistic and completely beneficial for both parties.
  • And finally, you will need to deliver your vision in a crisp, top-down, compelling and impact oriented way to your interviewers
At least 90%
are falling short with step 4!
While nearly all executives master step 1, at least ~30% are falling short with step 2, at least 70% at step 3 and at least 90% at step 4! So being an executive is NOT enough to break into MBB, you also need to be vision-aligned.

And trust me, you do not want to be in competition with one of our mentees here, because they will be vision-aligned to the absolute maximum possible.
